what NetUse is for (some questions and answers)

We’ve noticed a few comments on the AppStore about NetUse not being able to monitor multiple computers and others. Since there is no way to comment on this via the Appstore I would like to clarify some things on our site. First of all NetUse is a network monitoring app designed specifically to operate with SNMP (simple network management protocol) enabled hardware. We’ve implemented full SNMP support including version1, 2c and 3. An ideal place for monitoring your local network usage is your network’s gateway, specifically a network interface on a router through which all...

How to reverse upload and download in NetUse?

Some routers provide network interfaces to monitor over SNMP which report  reversed readings. If you came across one of these and wonder how to get NetUse to flip download and upload readings here is how. We’ve added to NetUse a special plist parameter to flip upload and download usage. Just open a terminal window and run the following: defaults write net.dewdropstudios.NetUse inverseUsage -boolean yes Restart Netuse, the above command will flip around down/upload readings. Why do we keep on using a plist file for various settings and tweaks? Well, we’ve decided to keep...

Apple’s Airport Utility 6.0 update

Apple’s just released an update for Airport Utility (version 6.0) . This upgrade includes a completely redesigned user interface and it is missing some functionality. In particular there is no SNMP configuration available among other things. If you plan to monitor Internet traffic over SNMP using NetUse, please do not upgrade your Airport Utility (or keep an older copy as well). We’ve contacted Apple to get a clarification on the issue. Here is an official link to download a version 5.6 of Airport Utility which provides full access to your Extreme (or Time Capsule)...

Airport Extreme 5th generation and 7.6 firmware update

A few days ago Apple released a firmware update v7.6 for Time Capsules and Airport Extreme routers. We’ve tested NetUse with 7.6 firmware update and it works great. The latest firmware update had changed a list of available network interfaces on these routers. In particular the ppp network interface (used to connect to an ADSL modem) now is present in the list even though you don’t use PPPoE connection. Under “advanced options” in NetUse configuration assistant we have “Prefer ppp network interfaces” checkbox checked by default which could result in...

NetUse 1.2.2 is ready

NetUse 1.2.2 is ready, approved by Apple and will be available on the AppStore tomorrow (September 16, 2011). Our free SNMP test utility is updated to 1.2.2 as well and is available. We’ve added SNMP timeout and number of SNMP retries settings into both applications. Since timeout and number of retries rarely require any adjustments, we’ve decided to make them available though plist only to avoid any confusion. How to edit a plist file? It’s quite simple, please spend a few minutes and read on the...
