Airport Utility 5.6 and Mavericks

As you might notice AirPort Utility 5.6 no longer runs under Mavericks. Apple had changed one of theirs private frameworks in Mavericks, in particular Apple80211.framework and that’s why Airport Utility 5.6 doesn’t run under Mavericks. The only option is Airport Utility 6.x, but it sucks for many reasons. Fortunately enough Corey I. Mahler developed a “custom launcher” which basically loads a previous version of the above mentioned framework and makes Airport Utility 5.6 alive and well under Mavericks. For these who interested in the details, please read on his blog...

NetUse 1.3.2 and MacOS Mavericks compatibility issue

We’re all very exited about new Mavericks. I think it’s just awesome. However  NetUse (version 1.3.2) is acting up under new Mac OS release. The root of the problem is in Apple’s App Nap technology introduced in Mavericks. It power downs the apps while they not actively in use by a user, for most apps it’s not a problem, however NetUse needs to work constantly even when it’s in a background to gather traffic usage stats. As a workaround you can disable App Nap for NetUse. To do so, right click on the app and then do a Get Info with the app highlighted.  From...

NetUse configuration tip for Cisco routers

We receive quite a few questions about SNMP configuration on Cisco routers in particular why NetUse shows only “spikes” one  realtime graph instead of a smooth curve. There is nothing wrong either with NetUse nor a router. Some roters set to 10-15 seconds SNMP poll by default while NetUse requires 1 second SNMP poll  in order to draw a nice looking realtime graph. We plan to add an interpolation option in one of the upcoming NetUse updates but in meantime here is a quick tip on howto adjust router’s SNMP poll settings. We have a Cisco RV110W configured for SNMPv3...

We have some exciting news not exactly related to NetUse. One of our teammates is a smoker. He has been trying to leave this nasty habit behind for quite some time now and we’ve decided to support his quest by making a small Christmas gift for him - a helper iPhone app which we called “Gotta Smoke?”. The app uses special addiction evaluation algorithms and statistical analyses to determine your regular, everyday, smoking habits, creates and assists you in following a quitting smoking routine. A break smoking program is customized to your unique smoking habits and...

NetUse 1.3.0 is out

We have very exciting news: NetUse 1.3.0 is available today on the AppStore. One of the new and long awaited features is finally here - custom filters support. Now you can easily create a custom filter for any data range. The custom filter editor looks amazing and very easy to use. NetUse was updated with full support of retina displays and it looks even better now on these new MacBook Pros. The app now is fully converted to 64 bit (however it runs in 32bit mode on Snow Leopard) and SNMP support was improved as well adding more hardware support. NetUse’s memory usage was...
